MEDICAL CODING.
The International Classification of Disease (ICD) is the most widely recognised medical classification. Maintained by the World Health Organization (WHO) its primary purpose is to categorise diseases for morbidity and mortality reporting. The coded data is often used for other purposes too including reimbursement practices such as medical billing. After the medical billing process these are sent to insurance companies to claim insurance and payment purposes. A simple code can carry a lot of information about a patient's diagnosis. For example, R09.1 denotes pleurisy.
